The Original

The bottle that started it all.

Our most loved blend. A warm, woody mix of argan and jojoba, finished with cedarwood, sandalwood, and a quiet hit of vetiver. It softens coarse hair, calms the skin underneath, and never leaves a greasy shine.

Midnight Cedar Beard Oil

Smoky cedar, black pepper, leather

A deeper, smokier take on our original. Black pepper and a touch of leather sit under charred cedar for an evening scent that holds its own without taking over the room.

Our story

Started in a kitchen.
Still made by hand.

Brute & Bristle started in 2019 when our founder Eli got tired of beard oils that smelled like chemicals and left a greasy film on everything he touched. He wanted something simpler. A short ingredient list, real oils, and a scent that actually smelled like the woods it came from.

The first batch was twelve bottles, blended on a kitchen stove in Northeast Portland and given to friends with one request: tell us what is wrong with it. Six years later we still blend in small batches, still test every batch on ourselves first, and still answer every email that comes in.

We are not for everyone. If you want a $9 bottle of synthetic fragrance from the drugstore, we are not it. If you want a bottle of beard oil made by people who care, you are in the right place.

What goes in

A short list of
real ingredients.

Every bottle we sell starts with argan and jojoba, then a small number of essential oils chosen for what they do, not how cheap they are. If we cannot pronounce it, it does not go in the bottle. Here is the full list.

Argan Oil

Cold pressed from Moroccan kernels

Rich in vitamin E and fatty acids. The backbone of every oil we make, it softens coarse hair and feeds the skin underneath without sitting on the surface.

Jojoba Oil

Structurally close to human sebum

Mimics the oil your skin already makes, which means it absorbs fast and never feels greasy. The reason our beards feel cared for, not coated.

Cedarwood Essential Oil

Steam distilled from cedarwood

Warm, dry, and unmistakably woody. The signature scent of our original blend and a natural partner to sandalwood and vetiver.

Sweet Almond Oil

Pressed from sweet almonds

A light carrier oil that helps the heavier ingredients absorb evenly. Carries scent well, leaves no shine, never clogs pores.

Applying beard oil with the hands

The daily ritual

Three minutes, every morning.

A good beard does not happen by accident. It happens with a short, repeatable ritual that you can stick to. Here is ours, built around the tools in our shop.

  1. 01

Wash, two or three times a week

A small pump of Sage and Pine, worked into a wet beard. Rinse clean. Skip this on the days you do not wash and the beard will keep its natural oils.

  2. 02

Towel dry, then add the oil

Three to six drops of Original in your palm, rub the hands together, and work it through from the skin out. The brush makes this even easier.

  3. 03

Shape with balm if you need it

A pea sized bit of Highland Moss balm for the flyaways. Less is more here. You can always add another half pea if you need to.

The crew speaks

Twelve hundred reviews.
One common thread.

“Three weeks in and the itch is gone for the first time since I grew this thing out. The cedar scent is real, not chemical. I will be a customer for a while.”

“I have tried every beard oil on the shelf at the drugstore. None of them come close. This one actually softens the hair instead of just smelling nice for an hour.”

Daniel Okafor

Beard length, 2 years · Brooklyn, NY

“The Midnight Cedar is the first beard product my wife has actually complimented. That alone makes it worth the price. Bottle lasts me about six weeks.”
